Valeriana officinalis, commonly known as valerian, is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. Its root and rhizome have been used for centuries as a traditional medicine for sleep disorders, anxiety, and nervous restlessness. Valerian extract is one of the most popular herbal remedies for insomnia in Europe and North America.
