Chlorophyllin is made from chlorophyll, a green pigment that is present in plants. Chlorophyllin has been used in alternative medicine as an aid to reduce the odor of urine or feces (bowel movements). Sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC), a mixture of water-soluble chlorophyll derivatives, is used as both a food colorant and a common dietary supplement.

The alkali salts of Copper Chlorophyllins are obtained by the addition copper to the product obtained by the saponification of a solvent extraction of grass, lucerne, nettle and other plant material. The extracts from the plants are stabilized, causing displacement of magnesium from molecule core, and substituting it with copper. This forms a water-soluble colorant known as sodium copper chlorophyllin. Copper chlorophyllin is a permitted food colorant in European Union countries.
